Lake Erie is the world’s 11th largest
lake and one that
provides drinking water to 12 million U.S. and Canadian citizens. Toledo represents only a fraction of the
entire Lake Erie basin, but it lies along the heart of the western Lake Erie
shoreline—the most ecologically fragile and most biologically dynamic part of
the Great Lakes basin because of its shallowness and relative warmth. Just outside the Toledo area lies some of
North America’s top fishing and birding opportunities. Tom Henry

La Jolla is pronounced “La Hoya.” The origin of how La Jolla (pronounced as
La-HOY-a) got its name and history are unclear.
The coastal community is often mistakenly referred to as San Diego’s
‘Jewel’. Scholars who researched La
Jolla’s origin found no concrete answer to the meaning of La Jolla or exactly
where it comes from. The only thing that
is certain is that “La Jolla” is not Spanish for “The Jewel”. The coastal town is tucked away from downtown
San Diego, about 30 miles north of the Mexican border. The Kumeyaay,
local Native Americans, owned the land until it was colonized. It is unsure how long they were in charge of
the land because there are no historical records or documents. After studying artifacts that the Kumeyaay
left behind, historians estimate they were there for around 3,000 years. When natives were in charge of the land they
called La Jolla “Kulaaxuuy” which translates to “land of holes”. It is uncertain where this comes from. Some people believe the name comes from the
sea-level caves visible from La Jolla Shores. The topography of the land suggests that
because of the hills, there could have been more holes and uneven surfaces
before colonization. Despite the word
“jolla” sounding Spanish, it’s not a real word.
The Spanish word “joya”, which is similar in pronunciation to jolla,
translates to Jewel. Historians believe
that sometime in the 19th century when Spanish colonials
arrived on the land, they accidentally called it joya. The name has stuck ever since. https://www.lajolla.com/article/la-jolla-san-diego-jewel-meaning/

Potatoes, eggs and coffee beans each faced the same adversity–boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard and
unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer
shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling
water. Then the inside of the egg became
hard. However, the ground coffee beans
were unique. After they were exposed to
the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new. http://beginwithyes.com/potatoes-eggs-and-coffee-beans/ This proverb is sometimes told with carrot
replacing potato.

Sugar cookies and a smile greet every guest to this 1888 Stick-style
residence. Once the home of a founding
family of Milan, the Hack House now attracts visitors interested in the
architecture, furnishings, and decorative objects of the late Victorian
period. Four outbuildings (including a
three-seat outhouse) and period gardens complete a pastoral picture of
19th-century life. Tours of the Hack
House Museum are scheduled on Fridays from 1-4 p.m. May through November. See picture of house and map of location at https://www.michigan.org/property/hack-house-museum
Of the many architectural styles
prevalent in the United States during the Victorian era, the Stick
Style (1860-1890) was the most expressive of a building’s underlying
structure. Decorative wood trim, called
stick work, was applied to the exterior to emphasize the basic wood frame
structure underneath. Many fine examples
of Stick Style may be hidden beneath slipcovers of aluminum, vinyl, stucco, or
asbestos shingle installed in an attempt to modernize the appearance of an
older home. The Stick Style evolved from
the work of architect Gervase Wheeler, an English immigrant and author of Rural
Homes or, Sketches of Houses Suited to American Country Life, an influential
treatise on residential architecture first published in 1851. Over several years and eight editions, the
book popularized Wheeler’s ideas on design, particularly his notion that
buildings should be structurally truthful.
