QUOTES by American journalist Edward R. Murrow (1908-1965)
“A nation of sheep will
beget a government of wolves.” “We
cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.” “We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty.
When the loyal opposition dies, I think
the soul of America dies with it.” “The speed of communications is wondrous to
behold. It is also true that speed can
multiply the distribution of information that we know to be untrue.” https://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/178884.Edward_R_Murrow
QUOTES by Arnold Eric Sevareid (1912-1992) one of a group of elite war
correspondents hired by pioneering CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow, and thus
dubbed "Murrow's Boys".
"I have never quite grasped the worry about the power of the
press. After all, it speaks with a
thousand voices, in constant dissonance."
"The most distinguished hallmark of the American society is and
always has been change." "Next
to power without honor, the most dangerous thing in the world is power without
humor." http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/e/eric_sevareid.html Eric Sevareid Farewell Nov. 30, 1977

A U.S. district court judge has once again taken a look at three
publishers’ case against Georgia State University’s e-reserve and ruled that,
in 41 of 48 cases, no copyright infringement took place. The ruling at https://www.docdroid.net/doPcJWE/dkt-no-510-order-dated-2016-03-31.pdf.html, a 220-page walk-through that applies the four-part
fair-use test to each of the 48 cases, is seen by copyright experts as a
complicated decision that won’t be of much help to universities in determining
fair use, as it relies on revenue data not normally available. Still, observers described it as a win for
proponents of fair use and another loss for the publishers. http://www.bespacific.com/district-court-rules-favor-library-e-reserve-publishers/
Publisher, editor, and
award-winning children’s book author James
Cross Giblin died on April 10,
2016. He was 82. Giblin was born in Cleveland in 1933 and grew
up in Ohio. He studied at Northwestern
University before transferring to Western Reserve University (now Case Western
Reserve University) in Ohio, receiving his B.A. in 1954. Giblin received an M.F.A. in creative writing
in 1955 from Columbia University. As a
child he took an early interest in reading, and in drawing comic strips, which
he has said was greatly encouraged by his mother. This passion persisted and he worked on
school newspapers throughout junior high and high school and began to pursue
playwriting in college. He stayed in New
York City after earning his degree at Columbia to do so, but when that career
path didn’t go as planned, he took at job at Criterion Books in 1959, and soon
turned an eye toward specializing in the children’s book field. In the early to mid-1960s Giblin was an
associate editor at Lothrop, Lee & Shepard, then moved to Seabury Press in
1967 and became editor-in-chief, spearheading the development of the children’s
book line there, later called Clarion Books.
When Houghton Mifflin bought Clarion in the late 1970s, Giblin moved to
the company as Clarion’s publisher. In
1980 Giblin saw his first children’s book published, The Scarecrow Book (Crown),
written with collaborator Dale Ferguson. Giblin went on to write more than 20 books for
young readers, mainly nonfiction, historical nonfiction, and biographies. Shannon Maughan http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-industry-news/article/69940-obituary-james-cross-giblin.html

April 19,
2016 In
an unusual step for an American corporation, Ben & Jerry’s heavily promoted the arrest of the company’s senior
management on social media and in a press release that explained: “why Ben and
Jerry just got arrested”. “It all
comes down to a simple idea that we believe in whole-heartedly: if you care about something, you have to be
willing to risk it all--your reputation, your values, your business--for the
greater good,” the release said. Jerry
Greenfield and Ben Cohen were arrested while participating in the Democracy
Spring protests, a two-week series of demonstrations beginning on April 11,
2016 at the US Capitol. The
demonstrations are not affiliated with any presidential candidate, but are
calling on politicians at all levels of government “to commit to fight for
reform to save our democracy and ensure political equality”. The co-founders were released in time to host a
Monday night event at George Washington University, where they gave
students free ice cream and spoke to them about politics, including their
support for Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, who inspired a
limited edition Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor: Bernie’s
Yearning. Ben & Jerry’s social
media accounts have been dominated by coverage of the protests, which have been
called Democracy Spring and Democracy Awakening, and some of the company’s
board members and employees joined the co-founders at demonstrations on the
Capitol steps. Amanda Holpuch
