Needhams, a chocolate potato candy that originated in the state of Mainedates back to approximately 1872 and it was named after George C. Needham, a popular preacher from Maine.  But the candy itself was developed by a cook who worked for a candy-maker named Seavy--and he ingeniously came up with the idea of developing a candy using Maine potatoes.  (Maine was once the largest harvester of potatoes in the United States.)   Find pictures and recipe at https://www.afamilyfeast.com/needhams-maines-famous-potato-candy/

If you are lucky, in a dusty used book store or flea market, you may someday happen upon a copy of Mark Twain's Memory Builder, a history game developed by Samuel L. Clemens in the mid-1880s and debuted in 1892, an obscure treasure by one of America’s great writers, an old game of memory almost entirely forgotten today.  Twain’s game was little more than a cardboard score sheet, a set of instructions, a pamphlet filled with historical facts, and a box of pins.  Yet the idea of this game consumed the attention of America’s great humorist for two years, including those heady months in 1883 when he was finishing The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.  That summer, he quit writing every day at 5:15 pm, then burned midnight oil working on his memory game.  What is Mark Twain’s Memory Builder?  Players take turns stating historical facts and dates, earning scores.  The player with the most points wins.  Twain’s description of the game and his rules printed on the back of the game board, are funny—not a surprise, given the author—but game play lends itself to more sober exchanges of historical information.  Twain fancied himself an inventor, and this was not his first patent.  Fourteen years earlier, in 1871, he received patent no. 121,992 for an adjustable garment strap.  In 1873, he received patent no. 140,245 for a self-pasting scrapbook that eventually sold more than 25,000 copies, becoming the most profitable of all of Twain’s books during his lifetime.  Read much more and see graphics at https://timeonline.uoregon.edu/twain/pleasures.php

In physics, noise has been popularly defined as a disturbance, especially a random and persistent disturbance, that obscures or reduces the clarity of a signal.  It is a known fact that white color consists all the colors that can be seen.  This holds true in case of sound too, where white noise gets created when sounds of different frequencies reach one's ear.  Read descriptions of white, pink, red, blue, green, grey and black noise at https://sciencestruck.com/what-are-different-colors-of-noise

"I've missed over 9,000 shots in my career.  I've lost almost 300 games.  26 times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed.  I've failed over and over and over again in my life.  And that is why I succeed."  Read other quotes by Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born 1963, also known by his initials, MJ, retired professional basketball player, businessman, and principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets at https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Michael_Jordan

Scott County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee.  As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,228.  Its county seat is Huntsville.  Scott County is known for having seceded from Tennessee in protest of the state's decision to join the Confederacy during the Civil War, and subsequently forming The Free and Independent State of Scott.  Scott County was formed in 1849 from portions of Anderson, Campbell, Fentress and Morgan counties.  It is named for U.S. Army General Winfield Scott, a hero of the Mexican War.  The county remained a pro-Union enclave throughout the war.  The proclamation was finally repealed, over a hundred years later, by Scott County in 1986.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_County,_Tennessee

worry wart  The origin, as so often with popular phrases, is a comic strip.  In this case, it was the highly popular Out Our Way by J R Williams, which began life in 1922 and ran until 1977.  In the early days it often featured a small-town family.  One of the boys, aged about eight, was nicknamed Worry Wart by his elder brother.  http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-wor4.htm

Thomas John Thomson (1877–1917) was a Canadian artist active in the early 20th century.  During his short career he produced roughly 400 oil sketches on small wood panels along with around 50 larger works on canvas.  His works consist almost entirely of landscapes depicting trees, skies, lakes, and rivers.  His paintings use broad brush strokes and a liberal application of paint to capture the beauty and colour of the Ontario landscape.  Raised in rural Ontario, Thomson was born into a large family of farmers and displayed no immediate artistic talent.  He worked several jobs before attending a business college, eventually developing skills in penmanship and copperplate writing.  At the turn of the 20th century, he was employed in Seattle and Toronto as a pen artist at several different photoengraving firms, including Grip Ltd.  There he met those who eventually formed the Group of Seven, including J. E. H. MacDonaldLawren HarrisFrederick VarleyFranklin Carmichael and Arthur Lismer.  In May 1912, he visited Algonquin Park—a major public park and forest reservation in Central Ontario—for the first time.  It was there that he acquired his first sketching equipment and, following MacDonald's advice, began to capture nature scenes.  He became enraptured with the area and repeatedly returned, typically spending his winters in Toronto and the rest of the year in the Park.  Although he died before the formal establishment of the Group of Seven, Thomson is often considered an unofficial member.  His art is typically exhibited with the rest of the Group's, nearly all of which remains in Canada—mainly at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg and the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound.  See many graphics at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Thomson

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY  The tax which will be paid for the purpose of education is not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings, priests, and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the people in ignorance. - Thomas Jefferson, third US president, architect, and author (1743-1826)
